3 dunks that would make the dunk contest cool

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Like most people, I didn’t even watch the NBA dunk contest this weekend. Why would I? Rudy Fernandez had the best dunk of the night, and he scored a 42. As funny as it was to see Nate Robinson teabag Dwight Howard, the dunks this year were decidedly lacking in creativity and execution. Here are 3 dunks I hope to see LeBron do next year:

  1. Dunk the same ball twice. Dunk it once on your way up (probably left-handed), placing your other hand at the bottom of the net. Then windmill it back in with your other hand as you’re coming down. Gerald Wallace of the Charlotte Bobcats claims he can do this.
  2. Use the top of the backboard as a ball rack. It’s a good bet that only Dwight Howard could do this, but if you could set the ball on the top of the backboard, then grab it off the top and stuff it, I think you’d win instantly. Or, you could run towards the hoop, tap it to yourself, then grab it mid-air and jam it.
  3. Two Balls, One Cup. Similar to #1, except it involves a teammate. You’d start off with some kind of two-handed slam, then, using your momentum and the rim, do a pull-up to launch yourself up an extra foot or so. At that point, your teammate would fire an alley-oop, which you’d catch and throw down. This would require incredible timing–the teammate would probably have to throw the pass before the first dunk was complete. But how sick would it be?
