Reykjavik day 3
Once again I got home at 6 am, so I took a little nap before waking up at 2ish. I decided to visit Perlan, or “The Pearl,” which is home to the Saga Museum and the local Dharma Initiative station. The weather was supposed to be 58 degrees today, so I dressed pretty light. But I guess there’s a saying, “You don’t like the weather in Iceland? Wait 5 minutes,” and halfway through the 45 minute walk the windchill and rain started being mean and I was starting to rethink this whole 9 days in Iceland thing. Luckily, when I got to The Pearl, I saw this:
It was my lucky day as they were having an impromptu outlet store in The Pearl, wherein I bought a pocket-sized windbreaker that may prove to be my smartest purchase of the trip. People were going Stefani (that’s B-A-N-A-N-A-S) for the cheapish by Icelandic standards shoes and 66 North outerwear. Given that my one pair of shoes is now completely wrecked from the bars here, it was tempting to buy some Ed Hardy shoes at 50% off but then if I were to wear Ed Hardy I might have to kick my own ass.
As for the Saga Museum, it’s allegedly a display of the savagery and majestry of ye olden Viking times. However, the museum itself is no bigger than my apartment and for 1000 ISK (about $12) I expect more than a couple wax Viking sculptures, even though they are hilarious looking. There really isn’t anything to do at Perlan except go on the observation deck, so I went and observed that a) it was fucking cold and b) nope, no option b. Unless you’re dead, that is; the front page of Perlan’s site advertises the building as a great place for funeral processions. I know people here are all heavy and brooding due to their history of Viking hardship, but come on!

My childlike facial expression belies the fact that the chain is threatening to cleave my junk in twain
On my way back home I stopped by the city art museum, which was meh, and also the attached park, featuring a zipline (!) for the kids. OMF! Then it was a mandatory stop at Sandholt bakery, where I got an okay cookie, but nothing up to the level of the first two days. Then I spent the rest of the evening planning my next few days. I’ve decided “Eff this, I’m through being cheap,” so I’m going to go to all the chic restaurants and eat reindeer and puffin and other cute animals. There would be no raging tonight as everything closes at 1 on Sundays, which is good because I can use the rest…
